It's hard to say. I think mainly what did it in was time. Nothing will last forever. Everything will be degraded and wither through time. You could take many opinions as to when wow exactly went downhill but does it even matter? It was going to happen no matter what. You could easily just point to wrath and notice that that's when subs peaked and ever since it's downhill. Or you could make any argument about any time in WoWs history. It doesn't matter though.

The decision to make the Forsaken a thing, reopening the defunct faction war, and removing real elves from the Alliance were all done in FT and purely for the sake of establishing WoW's starting point.

Worst of all, the addition of straight-line dungeons where every mechanic can be ignored while you mow down enemies. That was the beginning of the traditional MMO style combat being replaced with Diablo-style action RPG combat.
And I don't want to forget the Timeless Isle. It's an outdoor rare farm picnic that feels like it was created from the fantasy of an Everquest veteran. "Ah dude, what if there was an island and rares popped up every 10 minutes and they had like cool loot. Aw dude, I'd live there." Timeless Isle feels like a parody of what non MMO players think an MMO is.
