When I was still a sprout and making my way through Coils of Bahamut, I was carried through it by a healer that was a fully white Hrothgar which looked impossibly fucking cool.
It's definitely doable to make Hrothgars look visually appealing, most people just don't know how/want to take advantage of what the cool aesthetics of lion imagery can be like.
Also I am convinced that whoever designed Reaper's concept art with a Hrothgar player was aware of Lynx in Chrono Cross and doing a deliberate reference.
