Portal could've been god-tier horror game on top of being already a great puzzle game if something was actively hunting/chasing you throughout the whole game and you had to solve puzzles quickly.

How would the thing that's chasing you work for the tight corridor puzzles that require near constant back and forths

>XYZ could have been better
That would be epitaph on the grave stones of a lot of games if it weren't for the "people" who playtest and determine the lowest common denominator for those games.

>and you had to solve puzzles quickly.
People already struggled with the puzzles in P1 adding time pressure into it would have sent them into a screeching rage

should try alyx

yes dummy it's called GLADOS. the first game was already like that. it actually fit into the half life universe. the second went full disney pixar

Time limits and puzzles don't mix well.

Am I the only one who thought that Portal 1 was a top tier horror/paranoia game and felt that 2 wasted it by leaning into the humor too much?

i always felt that way. i could probably appreciate it more on its own terms if i tried it again but at the time it was an obvious disappointing direction

I know what you mean. What other games tap into that same paranoia without being full blown horror?

portal 1 is one of those special games where you can just linger in one random area and feel chills

>Rushing the player instead of letting them solve the puzzles at the pace they want
>You get caught, you have to try the puzzle from the beggining
>It's the same puzzle, so you know how to progress trough it until the point you got caught
>Solving puzzles becomes a drag

Would the game be even creepier if it still had Beta/Nova Prospekt aesthetic?

No, you'd just get 1/3 through the puzzle then the thing kills you, you restart, you get 2/3through the puzzle, the thing kills you again and then on the third go you complete the puzzle and the thing never gets there

The game was barely 90 minutes long and half of that is without a fully functional portal gun. I needed something to boost the challenge

Would work if it was like a sonic game where failing would just put you on a lower route instead of killing you. Would also make replaying worth it
Of course they'd never do that

>le monster is chasing you!
