I always see this as an argument but it's not mutually exclusive to the first claim.
YES, you can hate popular things. Nothing is flawless, and not all popular things are good. Everyone SHOULD have their own values to uphold things to, and if something doesn't meet them, you're right to dislike it, even if it's popular. What makes someone interesting isn't whether or not they like popular things. Rather, the REASONS why they do so stem from what makes them interesting in the first place.
NO, liking popular things simply because they're popular is not a substitute for a personality. You won't look cool, or smart, or thoughtful. Arguments based on this mindset are paper thin and can be spotted from a mile away. Too many kids on this board are so afraid to be judged that they'll just baselessly lash out at anything anyone likes, in hopes that they'll seem tougher than they really are for it. It doesn't work.
