If you had the context for Hollow Knight's ending, it's rather sad imo
As a child of the Pale King and Void, the MC is duty bound to vanquish the infection. And so is his brother who currently houses the source of the infection.
He chooses to help the MC kill himself by repeatedly stabbing himself through the gut whenever he regains consciousness. The act isn't just for show, the self mutilation does reduce his HP
