you're probably just playing it wrong. Boomers forget all the shit they had back when they first played it. Magazines, walkthroughs in the form of books, free customer service when they got stuck, etc.
First of all, the instruction booklet, it's free on nintendo's website. Then google and download zelda 1 map, unless you patched your rom to have that built-in. If you're still getting stuck too hard, try using a strategy guide that doesn't spoil too much

The real Zelda as we know it today started with A Link to the Past. Yes, BotW as well has a lot more in common with ALTTP than Zelda 1 even if Nintendo shilled it as a back to the roots thing for marketing
