I feel like they impressed Nintendo enough that Nintendo isn't crawling up their ass about things they normally get upset about. Wasn't Nintendo interested in doing Pixar-like stuff with Mario anyways? Luigi's Mansion 3 is basically that, so clearly Next Level Games did something good enough to leave them alone and let them do their thing.

People are upset at how fucking boring Paper Mario's been with the Mario universe for the last several games. Tanabe came out and said "We can't make unique character designs meant to fit in the Mushroom Kingdom" which seems like it falls in line with how utterly sterilized the franchise became somewhere around 2008-ish onwards, except other spinoffs are still getting around this and finding ways to have fun with the cast and setting just fine, while Paper Mario continues to spam generic Toads with little to no creativity ad infinitum.
