Automata had a ton of word of mouth about how outstanding it was after people reached ending E. The original is also a bit more tedious to get through to reach the final ending, that probably filters people a bit. The new ending in Replicant is fucking awesome though, so it's a shame.

Automata was announced when Platinum was at the height of their popularity. That plus Ass by themselves sold millions. The original Nier was okay at best and released when the hip thing to do was shit on Japanese games just because they were Japanese, and the remake is still limited by the source game plus the overall hype from Automata had died down.

Butchered american release, which is funny because the japanese thought americans wanted a father character rather than an older brother. Turns out all they wanted was ass.
Also the game itself is pretty bad and plays like an obscure ps2 game, automata is much more polished.
