I still remember how I'm banned from pretty much all NA servers because I called an admin gay for mortar truck camping outside of the maps bounds every match and he completely beaned me with no warning.
Since a majority of NA community servers are run by a single small group, Can't even play anymore because official servers are riddled with cheaters.

Battlefield was always a casual franchise focused on spectacle and cinematic moments, it has never had a competitive scene, what matters is that its fun.

Doesn't mean they should abandon the fundamentals of an FPS game. Why should I lose a gun fight because a random number generator decided if I was going to live or die. And that is considered fun?

There has been a competitive scene since BF2, newfag. It got a little traction in BF4 with ESL but DICE keep intentionally killing it, almost as if they don't want their game to be successful.
