It's a beast blood pellet, ie a ball of congealed blood taken from a dead beast. They're banned by the healing church due to their unclear origins. They invoke a spurt of beasthood in the user, activating the beasthood gauge. In this mode, dealing damage fills up the meter, and as the meter fills up your damage output increases and your defense decreases.
As you might expect, such an item has really no downsides and is overpowered as shit. But it tastes like blood because it's a ball of dried blood.
