Vita all the way, it can play PSP games no problem too, and to top it all off, the second analog stick helps with a lot of 3D PSP games like Monster Hunter.
The only thing is that the stupid back touchpad gimmick was just that, a stupid gimmick, just makes it more annoying to hold the damn console.

Excluding the software side, the PSP is in some ways more comfortable over longer play sessions, depending on what you're playing.
It's lighter and smaller, but the screen size is perfect for less-than-action games.

Just like the rest ppl say, vita because it can play psp but better since it has two thumbsticks and some psp games like monster hunter play better with two, has retroarch and an active homebrew community that has ported stuff like gta trilogy, quake, max payne, warcraft 1+2, xcom, virtual novels, mario64 etc. Pretty soon they will port zelda ocarina of time as well. Ps vita is the ultimate handheld emulation console right now.
Only go for psp(2000 and 3000 version are the best) if you are on a very short budget or if you cant into basic hacking/tweaking.
Ps vita has a relatively easy hack, but if you are "computer illiterate", you might want to avoid all that hassle and go for psp which is so easy to move files and hack it, even a retard can do it.

reminder Adrenaline pointlessly runs the Vita CPU at max speed (and the emulated PSP CPU, but changing that is pointless). I've not had success bringing up the overclock overlays or otherwise forcing the Vita's clocks down while using Adrenaline. if you feel like the battery goes pretty quick for PSP stuff, that's why.
similarly, any homebrew would be better off running natively (i.e. emulators through RetroArch) and underclocking for sweet battery gains.

small correction. the blame might not be Adrenaline and the PSP emulator was always like that, but the point remains. if you *could* underclock the Vita inside the PSP emulator you'd be better off.

with this specific design, the huge ass charging stuff is a good first reason. the speakers were also on the bottom for the 1000 but not later models (and back to the bottom for Vita, which moved the charging to the center).
what they should have done is commit to USB charging, but it was a different era.
