Is it fair to say this is the reason Kingdom Hearts gets a reputation as being stupidly complicated and confusing?

The first one was just about touring some Disney princess worlds

The director fucked up 3

I think that title belongs mainly to this fucker.
The worst KH2 ever did was blatantly insert Chain of Memories characters into the intro of the game, but they were relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Namine is more of a plot device than a character, and DiZ wasn't even explained in CoM so playing it didn't really help you much. Oh, and the fact that "Organization 13" is closer to "Organization 7" at the start of the game. That doesn't really get touched on, either.

most japanese things are convoluted and have wacky name conventions but everyone ignores that because they have a hateboner for disney/anime/kingdom hearts because they want to fit in

No, everything after 2. Turn your brain off to play anything that came after 2.

It's to do with how the story is paced rather than the specifics of how the rules of the setting work. Filling the middle 36 hours of your 40 hour RPG with filler is not a good way to make a plot most players understand. Rehearsing Disney movies doesn't make people understand how Nobodies and Xehanorts work. So long as you don't cram your exposition to the margins of your narrative, kids are able to follow complicated fictional rules and overlapping characters, just look at Homestuck.

>mom im fitting in on the internet!

>You're here and yet you understand nothing
nah the franchise always tried to be over-complicated on purpose

Digimon 1 was a straightforward subversion of the prophecized hero shit. The worlds are in danger and the hero went to the badguy side because he was super antsy about going on an adventure. The hero's sidekick / best friend accidentally gets the magical weapon of prophecy and manages to fucking EARN his position as the hero of the known universe.
The main thing that was bullshit with it was the whole soul shit and how Kairi was able to magically restore Sora back to normal.
The rest of the games are the ones that give Kingdom Hearts the reputation for bullshit. Especially when it was revealed that Xehanort had time powers. Fuck Xehanort's hax.

>Digimon 1
Sorry, I came out of a Digimon thread just before so that was still on the brain.
Kingdom Hearts 1.

Should have made the games about the actual plot and not 90% disney wankery and try to fill the last bits with as much retardation as possible.
>Dude, literally nothing happens on the first 8 worlds

Yes, but its not entirely its own fault.
CoM sort of fucked it by being an integral part of the overarching story while also having piss poor traction because it was a weird game on a different system from KH1.
There are other problems but CoM being in a weird limbo is the crux of it.

Kingdom Hearts 3 was a waste of effort

What Disney wankery? The only thing it has with Disney shit is the fact that the plot takes place in Disney worlds were you're rerailing the plots from how the eldritch monsters, local villains, and the extraplanetary cult of mass murderers fucked things up.
In KH1 the Disney worlds are pure excuse as you're trying to find your lost buddies. Unfortunately this lingers in the other games with less interested reasons for why you're bothering with those worlds.

Coded was worse.

>bloated lore
>every game is backloaded
>no time to develop OCs
>original worlds are too fucking small to give everyone meaningful backgrounds
It's a trainwreck of a franchise and it's mind-boggling that this shit still sells well. Nomura himself doesn't even know why are these games popular.

To think it would only get worse with KHUX and DR.

>Nomura himself doesn't even know why are these games popular.
Solid gameplay. Nostalgia in the Disney worlds since most of the good Disney games are all platformers.
And unfortunately horny yaoi bitches shipping children with grown ass adults.

>Coded was worse.
literally every single KH game has compounded on the looseness of the series story, but if you give a shit about 'canon' or 'verisimilitude' or shit at this point get yourself diagnosed.

KH1 had the Disney villains take an active role in the story. I blame Disney execs for fucking up every other game post KH1 by making them largely retreads of the movies.

This user () is correct but I want to add to it
CoM and KH2 were in development at the same time, and while CoM does make the story more confusing (the entire memory thing, introduction of Organization aka your typical shounen villain group, memory wipe at the end that get no explanation at the start of KH2 which confused people who skipped CoM) it created a decent groundwork for KH2 in terms of Organization and Nobodies.
Sadly, KH2 wasted all that potential - it was the first game in the series that started "plot only matters at the start and end of the game" (Hollow Bastion in 2 barely matters), it wasted Organization's goal as "lol we just want hearts" (and Sora just goes full "NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT, YOU'RE NOBODIES SO YOU'RE EVIL AND MUST DIE, YEN SID TOLD ME SO) and Maleficent became a member of Team Rocket because her partner is Pete out of all possible villains (so taking her seriously became impossible no matter how much Nomura push her in latest games). Then again, you can kinda think of KH2 as epilogue to Sora's story, because there was no real need to continue KH series with Sora - it's just Nomura going "nooooo Sora will always be the main protag" and refusing to start a different arc with different chars (instead he just gave all new chars one sidegame and then badly connected all of them in KH3).
Days was self-contained (before KH3) but its existence was not required. Coded was 99% filler but had fun gameplay (on both mobile and DS).
BBS and DDD is where the series really drops in quality and never recovers (with UX being the final nail in the coffin of "people giving a fuck about KH plot") - they're like several times worse than what CoM and KH2 did in terms of plot.
Now the question is - what was worse: CoM + KH2 dropping plot quality or BBS + DDD dropping plot quality even further? I think it's up to your preference, but I imagine that more people would find the latter to be worse.

Coded was as filler of a game as humanly possible. At least Roxasfags enjoyed seeing more of him in Days until the story was literally hijacked by the fucking puppet, Coded was for fucking nobody, and now Data Sora is not only a thing but is also deleted from existence unceremoniously. Probably for the best. Re:Coded at least had fun gameplay.

I'm not talking about canon. The game was shit and originally a phone game. We were lucky to get it ported to the DS unlike the other SE games with JP-only releases and while it wasn't as annoying as Chi it was still fucky.

It's not hard to understand if you watch the cutscenes in every game and read the in game reports.
