Because its a genre that inherently goes against the mainstream audience's taste, its all about planning out, minimal violence and passive playing until the perfect opportunity occurs.

That's a good initial hypothesis but why is there few to none niche titles on the indie space then? Far more cerebral and slower genres are incredibly popular in the indie scene.

Mainstream > indie in terms of best sellers. Some of them explode and take off but the majority of the games you're talking about don't leave circle jerk indie circles.

- enemy NPC AI isn't good enough for interesting stealth gameplay (either it has to cheat or is trivially cheesable and breaks immersion)
- stealth mechanics in 3D are hard to implement with nice player controls outside of somesort of VR set up (sight lines and visual occlusion etc are hard to represent, player noise is hard to represent fairly, etc)

You end up with tedious games.

No because they have endless rapid entertainment like tiktok and porn for free. Bread and circus makes the majority blind to the inevitable doom of our welfare western world.
