Nintendo is probably the only real subculture that remains, but even that has disproportionately loud and active adult fanbase making it cringe.
Back then, it was mostly children and young teens at oldest who would care or talk about nintendo passionately or even gaming. Its normal, expected, as its childish. Now its grown adults.
I always think its cute when i see an advert for pokemon now or whatever and imagine a new generation of children enjoying it but then im quickly reminded its mostly sweaty adults and cringe geeks in denial consuming jt

No game can give you losers what you want from it. Only a hobby in real life with all its complexity, level and depth and world interaction can, along with bottlenecks in real skill, time, money and location which makes them worthwhile for life.
