I think this is going to be his redemption arc. Both his wife and the mayor hate him, but most everyone else in town seems to still think of him as a loveable guy. Especially Rudy.

I'm also big on that theory, it fits in well with a lot of the evidence we have. It also explains why Rudy is still so buddy buddy with Asgore. He has a much more "You did everything you could" view of the situation as opposed to his wife who personally had Asgore fired for his failure.
