Why are necromancers alway portrayed as evil in vidya?
Are there any games with good necromancers?
Why are necromancers alway portrayed as evil in vidya?
Because necromancy was always evil in D&D.
>Are there any games with good necromancers?
Diablo II.
Divinity Original Sin 2 and Diablo 2
Diablo necromancers are true neutral
Being evil is like half the fun of being a necromancer
>raising unwilling souls as thralls isn't inherently evil bro
>a mere mortal raising people from the dead
>like God did for our lord and savior Jesus
You are full of sin!
Necromancers in Dragon Age 4 are basically magical morticians, and play a large role in ancestor cults.
All I want to do is to create the perfect undead abomination!
Not for power
Not for evil
But for good!
behold the standard of video game necromancers no other game has ever met
>Are there any games with good necromancers?
Dark Messiah.
They aren't good, they're just opposed to a demon invasion. They still kill shitloads of people.
Much less than a demon invasion would.
Necromancers rip souls back from the afterlife. In most cases, they stuff them back into their deceased, rotting carcass, and in all cases, they're bound to the Necromancer's will. What they create are unnatural abominations. It's really not the sort of magic that you learn without being a twisted individual. Historically, it's been considered an aberration going at least back to the Old Testament.
You could make a good necromancer, but you'd have to severely alter the way his magic works to the point where the original conceit is sort of lost. It'd really resemble shamanism more than anything else -- calling upon the spirits of the dead temporarily for guidance or aid before sending them back on their way. But even that is considered pretty gnarly stuff if you're using a Judeo-Christian framework.
Corpses automated with magical spells kind of like robots
Diablo 2
If it's just skeletons operated like puppets, then yeah it's definitely not inherently evil, just creepy. But communing with and binding spirits has always seemed pretty integral to the "necromancer experience" to me. Otherwise it's just corpse-themed telekinesis.
>Otherwise it's just corpse-themed telekinesis.
Pretty much. At that point you might as well animate golems or whatever and not bother with corpses at all. Necromancy is different than merely animating the inanimate.
>Judeo-
they don't believe in an afterlife
their warlord messiah is supposed to conquer the planet, then god resurrects all the dead chosen people and makes paradise on earth
>Dragon Age 4
They made a fourth? wat
>Dragon age origins
>Dragon age 2 the crazywall
>Dragon age 3 the Spanish Question
Dragon age 4 "who the fuck?"
As a long time mythological researcher, in most denominations of christianity there is a kinetic heaven and a hell (but that they will be emptied out during the last judgment), the soul sleep argument you speak of is niche.
Guild Wars
FInal Fantasy XIV had a Necromancer Warrior of Light 800PM
Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East. The Necromancer faction is trying to stop the Antichrist from being born and ending the world.
Samuel's spirit was called back by a witch in one of the Old Testament books. I think she was under the command of King Saul. There is still some concept of a soul/shade that exists after death, even if it's not conscious until the chosen are resurrected.
