Better timings on everything in the game. It just has that MT Framework in-house Japanese Capcom polish the other games are lacking. The game looks cleaner and crisper, the art style is better, the voice acting is better, the game exists as a timeless homage to Romero and American Culture through a Japanese lens.
Its just all the in the subtlety and I think anybody who prefers 2 over 1 just doesn't have a developed taste in smaller details and mechanics.

I never felt like it's horror. It just has tension because of the timer
the engine just feels slick. from the movement, to the visuals, to the polish. it is what it is. the rest of the games feel unpolished, like they're buckling under their own weight.
This game feels like an actual masterpiece. Like it's flawed and dated in several aspects but I only played it recently and yet only have fond memories of it.

The sequels got flanderized. In the first game you were using all kinds of weird weapons because the main character was just improvising and trying to stay alive. Then the sequels thought that the game was just about killing zombies with wacky weapons
the casino from 2 could have been better if everyone room where different like the ones from the mall, but they all look the same so is easier to get lost, which is a toruble in thoses kind of games with timers

Dead Rising 1 is so fucking good. I replayed it recently and is holds up really well.
