What are some series that crashed into the polygon ceiling trying to go from 2D to 3D, and series that broke through successfully?

He had a rough transition
i want a PC port of it so bad, you just know one can make really good levels using the assets

Mario if he real
Bubsy already sucked by Bubsy 2, and the first was only decent at best. Not surprising 3D sucked.
Castlevania and Earthworm Jim are two classic examples.
to say the least
I no longer agree with Castlevania. 64 is not perfect but it's good.
Successful - Ninja Gaiden, Excitebike, Grand Theft Auto
Unsuccessful - Contra, Final Fight, Tetris 3D (Virtual Boy)
3D was DOA after two great entries
Bomberman Hero was such a mixed bag but goddammit I still love it. If nothing else its soundtrack still fucking rules. Still probably some of the best use of common drum-and-bass loops.

every series that was on the SNES and stopped at the N64 and PS1
Hella comfy, thanks for posting that
And it hasn't gotten better. In fact, with each release it keeps getting worse in some respects or others.
>>also nails it first try, and is debatably still the best 3D entry in its series
hell yeah redial
I admire how ambitious these were gameplay wise, they could have played it safe and just translated the 2D gameplay as much as possible. OOT uses the game structure from ALTTP but gameplay wise it was such a leap, and Mario 64 obviously was a complete departure on all fronts.
Also deserves a mention
>also nails it first try
Likewise
I have even more respect for the final OoT we got after seeing the overdump leak and Spaceworld 97 Experience. It had some cool ideas for sure (e.g. I would've killed for the more organic, MM-esque foggy Lost Woods rather than the amusement park maze we ended up with) but the dungeon designs would've been awful. They hardly make use of the 3D aspect of OoT compared to the finals and basically seem like LttP dungeons but with a third dimension tacked on.
