So I'm 5 some odd hours into this game and it's still not "good" yet. Every battle just feels like I'm using whatever my party's best gimmicks are at the time, and sometimes that means jack shit (Locke+Celes's chapter was miserable as fuck for battles). The story also feels like it's cooking way too slowly even though it seems like shit MAY be about to go down. The Ghost Train was the coolest part so far, but for every cool thing like that there's some bullshit (any series of forced battles during the on-rails sections where you can't open your menu between fights, and enemy parties can just decide to wipe you whenever with massive damage all-hitting attacks, or deliberately killing a party member who isn't allowed to die).
PLEASE FUCKING TELL ME THIS PIECE OF SHIT STARTS TO GET GOOD REAL SOON because I'm seriously not seeing what everyone adores it for. Chrono Trigger came out the year after this but was GOOD FROM THE WORD "GO." FFV was ALSO good from the beginning. Even FFIV feels like it has more meaningful and speedy progress towards the game being good for fuck's sake.

I am not a zoomer like OP and never understood FF6's appeal either when games like Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG existed on the SNES. FF6 is just about a bare bones JRPG. Its strange how Square went from the fun job system of FF5 to a dumbed down FF6.

I've started and dropped FF6 literally 3 times in the past 15 years. It must've felt amazing on SNES, but those were very different times.

Interesting you call Chronotrigger. I think chronotriggers story is abysmal. And the gameplay gets boring much faster than in FF5. The forced parts of difficulty I think are nice to get the tension up and are not as redicilous as final fantasy 7 and higher.
The characters in FF5 should be relateable from the start and immerse you. If they and the atmosphere and music didn't you may not feeling it (the game). I still suggest you go all the way through, so you can at least hate it professionally and find all the arguments against it. I'm think your opinion is very valueable even if you dislike the game. Just finish it. I think it will get better, but I think even the beginning is good. I liked towns like Zozo and the Opera and many many other things in that game. I think it's pretty unique, still believeable and a great adventure.
