Wheatley isn't that bad.
Glados is actually more cringe in Portal 2, with her constant "you're so fat you broke the device lmao".
At least he's not Russell.

I want to fuck Glados
We all do.
The whole game is cringe; uninspired, lazy and soulless. We could've got F-Stop that would've kept the ominous and creepy atmosphere of the original intact, but instead we got possibly the most reddit game ever made.
Portal 2 was the beginning of Valve's downfall.

>Shortly after the release of the Orange Box, Gabe Newell was concerned that Valve was focusing too much time on releasing games
GABEN!!!!
>After nearing a year of active development, Valve began to question everything.
>Playtesters thought the overall mechanic of the game was fun, but were confused at the fact they didn't have a Portal gun... in the sequel to Portal
What is the Final Solution to the Playtester Question?
muh dick
Stop playtesting. Stick with your vision
Russel is hilarious and based. Glad they added him in hl alyx
I think he's badly acted. It's just Rhys Darby reading lines like a children's entertainer. Wheatley at least was acted with some effort.
Glados and Cave Johnson's obsession with "testing" in Portal 2 is a metaphor for Gabe Newell's own preoccupation with playtesting, which led to him ordering all the work on F-Stop to be scrapped, including the game mechanic, forcing the team to hastily assemble Portal 2 as we have it.
wheatey? you mean 343 guilty spark? who the fuck is wheatey?
go back newfag
Portal 2 fucking sucks. How can the perfection from the first game with its atmosphere be completely shat on its annoying Austin powers humor
I think he means the gnome from gnomeio and juliette
Valve used up the last bit of their creativity on Orange Box. Gabe Newell is a tasteless boomer.
I think originally planned direction for Portal as a series was to tie it up eventually with Half-Life in a much more direct and significant way instead of few callbacks and references here and there (as evidenced by Matt T Wood remarks), but because of major burnout after shipping Orange Box and engine's limitations Episode 3 and the next possible installments that Portal would've incorporated into have been put on hold till Source 2 was completed which became its own shitshow worth a decade of development hell. As the original plan crumbled, they decided to use community's impression of the game as the groundwork for series direction.
i think it was tied well enough that most people know both series take place in the same universe, the entire point of episode 3 (god rest her soul) was supposed to be about aperature
They wanted to go even further as in incorporating Chell into Episode 3/the next games.
imagine not liking portal 2 lmao
stop being contrarian
Valve is just stupid
F-Stop should have been used in its own independent project like Portal 1 was instead of building a sequel to an established ip around mechanics that have nothing to do with the original. Portal 2 was the right direction to take the Portal series and it's a fantastic game in its own right, but there was no need to throw out the F-Stop concept to do that.
They threw the baby out with the bath water
Even after Portal 2 i'm still hoping for a direct crossover between Portal and HL. Portal 2 certainly went into a whole another direction, both in lore and its humor, but it'd be such a waste i think to simply use the connection between the two series as a mere implied reference and not use it directly.
yeah thought so, but how would it work since shell was asleep for like a billion years. didn't the combine attack around the events of portal 1? meaning by portal 2 they should be long gone, unless that "you've been asleep for 50000 years " is a glitch and it was around 20 years when hl2 takes place. But doesn't glados also mention that something worse than her is going on outsie meaning maybe it's the combine? shit is so confusing
Well they didn't have Chell in hypersleep in Portal 1. At the end she escaped and that was that. Glados was pretty clear that the Combine invasion had just happened, and that the entire point of the exercise was to make a neat gun for the people who are still alive.
They literally changed the ending of Portal 1 so that Chell gets dragged back in and put into stasis for Portal 2. None of that was going to happen in the original plan. Portal 2 was going to be a prequel called F-Stop, partly in the TF2 style. The mechanic was going to be something like Superliminal.
The puzzles in Portal 2 felt too rigid. Once you see what you're looking at the solution is obvious, just annoying.
yeah but we gotta work with what we have now, and it seems impossible for chell to be in the next game, unless gordon wakes her up to help him, and since she doesn't talk it can explain why she doesn't mention gordon in portal 2. Just a small retarded theory. I think it's likely that valve will put her in the next half life but how will it be explained is the question. For all we know it can be right after portal 2 and chell's been asleep for only 20 years
Oh yeah there's no way to make Chell work now. You can't even have the portal gun really. Minus that, the Borealis would be just boring.
That's probably why they ended Alyx the way they did. Scrap all this built up stuff and get out of the corner they were in, completely open canvas from here.
That was all planned long before what we know as current Portal 2, we still don't know what originally the sequel was about. After the playtesters negative feedback of F-Stop they scrapped everything and made the decision to distance the game from the HLverse as far as possible hence the ambiguity of the dates.
My theory is that the ambitiousness displayed from the game signaled how they're still uncertain on whether they should involve Portal into HL directly or not.
I replayed Portal 2 last year for the first time since like 2013 and I felt it genuinely held up okay humor-wise. Many of the jokes that weren't memed to death made me at least smile a bit, and I'm sure the ones there were memed to death would have done the same if they weren't ruined for me through saturation.
