The best part is in dark souls 2 where chests are breakable and smash the loot that's inside. This way you wind up being too scared to check for mimics and can fully enjoy getting surprised.

Chests take like three hits to be destroyed in DS2. Wooden mimics have a lock on the front, metal ones have two silver latches. Enemies can destroy wooden chests in a single hit
