Holy shit Fallout 3 and Oblivion are ugly games

It's not a retcon. It was always a glaring mistake in the story that you couldn't just tell your radiation-immune companion to go turn the machine on. The only thing the DLC changed is that it openly admitted that the original ending sacrifice was pointless and unneeded, thus making it completely without any value as a sacrifice. It's as if you're separately deciding to both turn on the water machine and also deciding to commit suicide randomly for no reason, without any real relation between the two things.

Having obvious plot holes is one of the least writing problems Fallout 3 has when they're actively ignoring basic questions like how can people exist where they exist. This is basic writing 101, if you can't explain how something exists where it exists you're not fit to write for a living.

it was a glaring mistake in the story that thwy had to go back and add in. thats a retcon you fucking idiot. they told the story one way and then changed it later. there is 0 reason for anyone other than the one guy who wont due to not to turn on the machine regardless of your characters morality. viewing killing yourself or lions as the canonical ending is pants on head retarded.

Bethesda also didn't know what the hell to make of the world in the game. They could have just done Fallout 1 all over again in the East Coast and I would have been fine with it. Capital Wasteland is a radioactive hellhole and no one with 2 working braincells would fight for it. Oasis exists as a questline, why not make half of the map like it? At least it would give the impression that there is something worth fighting for there. In Fallout 1 there already were farms. With enough intelligence you can explain crop rotation to the people of Shady Sands. In Fallout 2 you have entire towns with their own culture and architecture. You have people developing their own world after the bombs fell.
200 years is a long, long time. I'd say that the English language should have vanished by then except for the vaults.

It obviously was a retcon. The game was meant to be a complete loop from your birth to death.
Just because it was shit writing, doesn't justify that "you always were supposed to be able to continue", because if it was so, it would've been so from the start

Yeah I really think the progress from FO1 to FO2 is missed by most people who rail against FO2. The game is all about NCR and their evolution, and NCR itself is the "ark" that carries with itself all of the wasteland History. It starts with raiders, and ends up with corrupt politicians. It essentially enbodies the "war doesn't change", which can be understood as "people don't change". But even among raiders there are good people, just like among all the corruption of NCR there are people who just want to do good but have to tiptoe around corrupt elements.

But that aside, I do believe FO3 has no reason to exist the way it is, but there IS somethign worth fighting; the rivet city's nuclear reactor. The advanced scientific development of Li's unit, such as hydroponics which are important for wasteland's sustainable development. There are also lots of vaults with lost technology that could aid the wasteland. BUT the reason why it shouldn't be possible for any human settlement to exist (yet) is because it's really just a hive of super mutants. Vault 87 is literally the spawning ground for mutants, and it needs to be taken out before any development can realistically happen in the area. After that, is the raider issue. Rivet City and BoS just don't have enough manpower to enforce peace and keep settlers safe from raiders in order to establish safe settlements. And the fact that this status quo has existed for 200 years is hard to suspend disbelief over.

religion is going to be the downfall of western civilization, or have you already forgotten about how your kind like to talk about how Islam is invading the west?

religion was created by scared people who can't accept the idea of there not being a 'plan' to explain away suffering (and wanted to believe that their enemies who got everything they want are actually being punished forever in the afterlife), and it's been co-opted by the powerful as a brainwashing tool to fuel tribalism
if you still believe in god in the current age when logic and reason have decided that the events described in the bible are either nonsense or completely impossible, then you are weak and stupid
