Because every gamer unconsciously accepts that their hobby is just children's entertainment. We are conditioned since youth to believe games are for children, and games as entertainment have not been accepted by society in the same way as other media.
Knowing that money is a measure of worth, due to this unconscious recognition that their hobby is immature, they will never spend more than a given sum on videogames.

Even if they outwardly say that they believe games are a better hobby than any other, they unconsciously just KNOW that their hobby isn't worth a damn, so why spend a damn?

Its just not worth spending that much for me because all I play nowadays in old games on dosbox/emulators, or indie games that have extremely low system requirements. I might upgrade my gpu when Baldur's Gate 3 is out though.

Video games attract manchildren, and manchildren are both entitled and ill-equipped to deal with real world things like finances. They also usually lack other hobbies, which means they have no perspective or context on what things are worth. They'll refuse to pay full price for games that don't contain at least 100+ hours of gameplay, even though that is an insanely good ratio of money to entertainment, while spending a shitload of money on fast food and other garbage.

Basically, it comes down to "gamers" being mentally stunted.

Hobbies aren't measured in amount of money spent on them and there are also levels of engagement.
