Because most vidya writing is hot garbage. Its not like they can make the game have the depth and coherence of a fucking novel unless they changed the whole format of the game and had a massive budget. Considering how good all the other stuff in the game is- visuals, music, most of the gameplay, characters- it makes sense that people would overlook some flaws in the story when the whole package is just solid.

well yes it's japanese. I don't know if you've ever watched some anime but they can't write a good coherent story to save their lives. Japanese stories are only good while you know nothing about them and when you get to the end you just feel ripped off because it's so disappointing or nonsensical. this game is about fighting as a waifu so don't overthink it, none of the words matter.

just cause it's called writing it doesn't mean it has the same meaning it has in literature
videogame writing is about usage of game mechanics, plot insertion in a game environment, and story/gameplay progression path
and automata excels in all of these, even with a dumb plot(which while not complex or particularly original, it's not that dumb anyway when compared to actual dumb game stories or overly edgy ones)

clever usage of non-linear story telling technique integrated both in the narrative and gameplay doesn't make it deep, it makes it clever when compared to linear story telling that simply features some basic cliche plot twist
