The person whose exploit took Souls servers offline is worried about Elden Ring

On January 23, Bandai Namco temporarily removed PvP servers for Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3, following the discovery of a severe remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability, which was said to allow abusers to take control of other players’ PCs.

Over one month later, and disappointed with the lack of action for such a serious security vulnerability, the person that found this RCE organised a stunt in which the exploit was performed in a non-malicious way on Twitch to capture the studio’s attention so they would be forced to address it.

The person who discovered the latest RCE alleges that there are serious issues with all of the Souls games’ shared network infrastructure and said they believe it’s “inevitable” that Elden Ring will feature many of the same exploits, which will “probably be ported without issues and used on release by malicious cheaters.”

thanks to the loud minority of based hipster chads opposed to any sort of multiplayer in games companies are now more incentivized to reduce replay-ability and you now must consume more.
thanks based hipster chads.

>replay with pvp

one month is not a long time to address fundamental problems in code. unlike an institutional corporation, teams that make games for children don't have a whole lot of security expertise or auditing resources. it's not surprising that their interim fix is to disable the servers which is pretty much what you would expect them to do in these situations.

tldr video games are toys for kids and nobody cares if the solution to a security problem is to disable the feature causing it.

t. the guy who got command line logins disabled in guild wars 2 and didn't try to get his 15m of fame from it

I replayed the shit out of DS1 and PvP played zero role in my enjoyment

it's weird that people are so vehemently anti pvp when you can just.... not do it. sekiro has no multiplayer and people love to complain that it doesn't have replay value. wonder why.

left out the part where coincidentally the blue sentinel had a fix out for it the very next day, almost like it was just marketing for their mod and they didn't expect Bandai Namco to actually call their bluff and shut down the servers

Still buying Elden Ring for PC.
Still playing online.
I will not be ruled by fear.

>tfw you wont be able to invade someones game acting as a boss with certain phases and movesets
cringe

>hehe look at this exploit that only I know about
>here just install my mod, (((Blue Sentinel))) that fixes it right up

I don't get why the PvP scene in Souls games were taken so serious. As far as i'm concerned, its merely a little optional stuff for the game. I'm not expecting that this side content could spawn this sprawling communities of autists and weirdos. Even these games have their own hacker communities in it for some reason.

Because there's no class builds

But the mod doesn't fix it...

To be fair, Sekiro also has no stats and no build variety. The only replay value I got out of the game was getting all achievements and then doing an NG+ bell+charm all bosses run.

The mod just prevents players from sending packets to you and will kick them from your world. It doesn't actually fix the problem which is an underlying issue in the network infrastructure.

Hoh boy

Crazy its taken over a week to patch this.
