only game where this wasn't the case for me was onimusha 3, not only because i learned how to use cheat engine with it but also because the grind for souls to max-out sword levels was aggravating and i wanted to see all the weapon level-up design changes
disappointingly the weapons were all functional counterparts to onimusha 1 weapons (tenso/kuga to raizan/enryuu) and the chigo axe to the dokoutsui hammer in 2 but they do look good leveled up, i actually ended up using the onimusha 1 swords the most after you get them as a NG+ reward
jacques won the hardest in terms of weapon uniquity, pretty unique too for getting two western weapons and a japanese spear compared to samanosuke getting primarily japanese weapons and a western style axe, or in the first game getting a nodachi, katana and a glaive
