they're called lookylikes

If you're going to make up terms you'll have to explain what they mean if you expect anyone to give a fuck.

*Metroidvania
The genre was created by Super Metroid and popularised further by SotN, which Iga didn't direct. Igavania is an incorrect term

>Implying

Super Metroid, by definition, is not a Metroidvania.

The best name for this genre is Progression Platformer

It has every hallmark except of the genre except RPG elements, which aren't an absolute necessity, e.g. Axiom Verge. As an originator, Super Metroid can't possibly not be an example.

Then you fundamentally misunderstand what a Metroidvania is. Using two games from the OP we can easily delineate between the two:

Bloodstained IS a Metroidvania.
Hollow Knight IS NOT a Metroidvania.

Symphony of the Night is the original game that birthed that autistic fucking term in the first place so let's use that as a baseline. What the fuck is SotN's main difference from Super Metroid? An expansive RPG system specifically revolving around a wide breadth of customization when it comes to both weapons, spells, and all manners of other mechanics, an idea expanded upon by Iga in every future Castlevania with it's most autistic iteration yet in Bloodstained. Metroidvanias then predominantly referred to the games released by Iga during that era hence the existence of the term Igavanias as well. As a side note, Classicvania refers to the original linear Castlevania experiences.

Hollow Knight is limited to one weapon, a few spells, and charms that slightly augment your playstyle but at the end of the day it always revolves around your one simple weapon. All it's other characteristics from extremely non-linear level design, standard power-up gating, exploration-focused gameplay and all that shit hearkens back to the philosophies Super Metroid and to some extent Zelda popularized. So what's a Metroidvania that has all Metroid but no vania? A Metroid-like. Most "Metroidvania" games that come out in this day and age are all fucking Metroid-likes. Hollow Knight in particular is a combat-heavy Metroid-like. Nothing more; nothing less.

To see the difference between a Metroidvania and a Metroid-like, you only need to see the differences between Bloodstained and Hollow Knight. Possibly the most quintessential contemporary examples of their respective genres.

what the fuck is search-action

blasphemous is shit

hollow knight is pretty good but it has a fanbase almost as bad as the souls one

bloodstained is pretty good too

Bullshit. RPG elements were *always* optional.
Metroidvania became a thing because one created the genre, and one popularised it because of how highly visible the console was. They aren't defined by customisation (and bear in mind SM has customisation) and RPG elements. They're defined by variable routes, progression unlocking new paths in previous areas and an abundance of optional gameplay using these tools. Without levelling, SOTN wouldn't need to be substantially different to be the same type of game. All it does is attempt beef-gating at certain areas, which is done in SM through capacity or weapon unlocks.
The real truth is the entire genre, RPG or no, would be Metroid-like *but* the popularity of SOTN encouraged the style of gameplay to spread beyond those two games. Delineating through RPG elements is just falling for Iga's snake oil masturbatory pitches

The genre existed before Iga became a director and all he did was more of the same as SOTN but with soul switching, but implicity took credit for the genre's existence.

One of the best search-action vidya.

I'll agree that Hollow Knight does not fall into the same category as the other games in its having only one tool. That's fine. But SOTN didn't inspire the term *Metroid*-vania on its own, that's just retarded.

La-Mulana, Hollow Knight, and Environmental Station Alpha are the best modern tansakus.

You forgot Rabi-Ribi.

It's there.

You mean platform based rpgs?

user...

It's a great game, but is slightly held back by offputting weeb shit and autistic bullet hell shit.

Hollow Knight is -almost- more overrated than Breath of the Wild.

haven't played HK but blasphemous is pure kino. Bloodstained was pretty good too.

that pixel game that was shilled in here is not good?
forgot the name of the thing

Ah, like Valkyrie Profile.

All of them?

Both games are underrated.

I don't know what you're talking about but if it's not on my list then I probably just haven't played it.

>search-action games

Nigger

That is an einherjar commanding strategy action game, user.

its like a dungeon crawler metroidvania where every pixel in the game is gravity based and can be destroyed individualy

They're hollowlikes

That's Noita and it's a roguelite, not a metroidvania. It's good but the appeal is completely different.

Should I play the other Momodora games before playing Reverie?
