Better

Unironically the golden age of gaming.

if you played video games in 2000 you did it because you wanted to and were among people who wanted to play video games
now a lot of people do it because it is there, like watching tv in the 90s

Ugly.

Good. Can't say the same today.

video game websites were still trustworthy and forums were bastions. any retard any age could go on gamefaqs or ign and join a well-assorted community that didn't give a shit what words you said or who you offended. websites like serebii even joked about users pretending to be racist. The word faggot was understood to be a friendly term. You could get banned from runescape and the mods would email you that you're muted temporarily instead of banned because they thought you were funny. we all used to shitpost game theories based on magazines. Game journos were drunk broke college kids with no meaning in life

the internet was pretty great before women

>runescape
Third worlders go home

they were generally worse, but there were way less of them, and combined with being young, it was easier to get into them or stick with one.
Now there is just too much choice and everything is made for LE EPIC ESPORTS so guarenteed to be watered down and homogenous as fuck

They were still relatively niche. That's all that needs to be said. I don't think there's anything that's niche anymore. Nothing exists in its own ecosystem. The internet has brought us together, sickeningly so.

>runescape
>DOOM originals
>upgrading my Pentium 4 PC with an AGP based Radeon 3850 to play DOOM 3
>Limewire
>AOL instant messenger
>video game forums like game spy
>cheat code central website

Call it nostalgia, but this was the best era for gaming. Don't even get me started on console gaming of the time.

Are you a time traveler, OP? It's 2022, we're still in the "2000s", just go play whatever

Great up until 7th generation. Then it went downhill from there. Otherwise there were a lot of hits between 2000-2005 with RS2 hitting the scene, WoW taking the world by storm, FFXI was booming on the MMO side of things with some of the best consoles and a lot of gems to go with them. Libraries were vast and game stores always seemed like a treasure trove.

Also want to add that the internet was still in it's youth at the time, so little was known about a lot of the games people played, thus adding to the experience before min/maxing became a thing.

Unlike what most will say itt, 2008 was pretty much the same as it is now. Big titles get most notice with the occasional small game being a hidden gem. Just look at how much trash was around back in 2008, people only remember the good things or the really bad things. They rarely remeber the average.
The reason many people on Any Forums look back on the mid 00's is due to them experiencing most things for the first time or close to it. Give it 10 years and people will back on 2020/21 the same once those young people grow up and become like us

>WoW taking the world by storm
I still remember the absolute tsunami that game made when it hit and people truly understood the size and scope of the game. I remember begging for my parents to get me the game + sub time and would play on my 800x600 CRT monitor for 10+ hours at a time. My friends would bring their full blown desktops and we'd all play in various parts of my house. My parents would just shake their heads at the fact that 4 of us would all be in the same house but talking to each other over the PC, only coming together to eat and discuss battle plans for dungeons and what not.

I don't talk to those guys anymore :(

just go play a game from the 2000s and find out dumbass

I think it's more about just the games user. I think it's more about the culture change of gaming and their target demographics. Late 90's into the early 2000's, games were made for gamers, by gamers, by devs who actually enjoyed games themselves. Money was of course always a goal, but games felt better. Then you look at today with blatant cash grabs made by politically correct devs who couldn't give half a fuck and it just pales in comparison. Tie all of this into the wild west of the internet really taking off for the first time, and it was the ultimate shit storm.

Most games still used server browsers, allowing anyone to run their own, rather than relying on devs/publishers to continue supporting their game. That's the one that hits me the most. Whenever I bought a game with multiplayer, I thought, "Wow! I could play this game for the rest of my life if I wanted to!"

They were true kino.

Lmfao what is this a nursing home lmao

Nobody had good computers so we all had gamecube and RuneScape in the library

Just go download some, geez

MMOs were fucking trash even then, but AAA games were still fresh and fun.

>Limewire
I loved the rush of either getting incredibly shitty porn or a virus that bricked my PC

Bruh...

A great time to be a gamer. So much tech improvements were happening, and dev teams were still on a small enough scale that it still felt like a band of rebels doing what they loved doing and distributors didn't have such a short leash.

excuse you. I had a good computer
>gateway desktop
>Pentium 4 WITH HYPERTHREADING
>2GB DDR
>160GB HDD
>100Mb/s capable NIC
>AGP Radeon 3850
>standard 56x CD drive
>Kenwood 72x CD drive
>mutli-reader with TWO USB 1.0 ports
>85HZ 800x600p CRT monitor

>Women
Women are a symptom of what really killed video games, and all niche "nerd" hobbies in general.
Big Bang Theory.

I started to type out some kind of answer but I got so nostalgic and sad that I couldn't

What is that and why does the interface look like an RTS?

I honestly learned as much as I did about computers and technology overall from accidentally downloading malware. Or looking up "boobs" on Yahoo! or AskJeeves on my out of date Internet explorer version.

I thought I was 1337 hacker tier because I downloaded Limewire Pro using Limewire Basic.

Everyone was passionate and optimistic. Games only seemed to ever improve.
ICQ server down? bitch please I have runescape

Teeworlds or Teewars as it was called was in it's prime before it got infested with bots. Modbros made DDrace, laser only, build servers, city servers everything was filled.. One of the best 2dplatform shooter ever.

We had shit internet thou
