You're right, I completely overlooked character action / hack and slash / whatever you want to call it. Any of those are good recommendations.
I personally dislike TWEWY and SMT, but as far as dipping your toes in the JRPG genre I stand by my Final Fantasy recommendation, maybe I'd tack on Bravely Default.
That's not to say they're bad games, I just don't think that if I had to pick a JRPG to rep the whole genre it'd be from either of those series.
