Being normal

They really like ~3 normal types. It isn't rocket science. Steel is my favorite type just because there's a bunch of steel types I love. People don't usually pick their favorite types because of the type itself. Unless they are an edgelord who picked fire, dark, or dragon anyway. All it'd take for someone to prefer normal types would be some shit like Porygon-Z, Silvally, Kangaskhan, Snorlax, Blissey, Eevee, etc... in their top favorites.

Ability/Usefulness/Cuteness

I never used a Normal type on Gen 1, but Rattata and Raticate are fearsome opponents, their bites be damned. In Gen 2 I used a Dunsparce. In Gen 3 I use Linoone (mainly because I can get lots of cool stuff and it's a cute mon). In Gen 4 I used a Bibarel. It has shitty stats, but being dual type and can learm many HMs makes him a somewhat useful HM slave, plus STAB helps him a lot.
Also, as a small sidenote, when I play FRLG, I use a Clefable. Very strong, and Meteor Smash is great.

The awkwardness of loving Clefable only for it to become a fairy
