In most states (if not all) you can still get on welfare programs like food stamps, even if you have a full-time job as long as it doesn't reach over $25k a year.
They also mooch off of their families, whether that's living with them rent free or just straight up begging them for money every other month.
Then there's just the aspect of living cheap. Having like 5 full outfits at most that they bought from wal-mart, eating fast food, too poor to have a car so they don't have to worry about the expenses associated with one, primary source of entertainment is sex with other poor people (added bonus: having kids entitles you to more welfare and child support if you're a woman).
