I am a geologist currently doing my PhD on the subject of rare earth elements (REEs). At present, about 95% of the world's REEs are produced by just two deposits, located in China. I expect that this will likely change within the next ten to twenty years. Western nations have become increasingly interested in developing alternative sources of REEs to reduce their dependence on China (my research is part of this effort). I am certainly not alone and I know that governments plan to invest a lot more money into further research over the next ten years. If we are successful, then the supply of REEs would increase considerably and the price would correspondingly fall. However, there would be significant opportunities to invest in mining companies exploiting these new sources of REEs. As of now, I don't think that any of us are close to a breakthrough.
