The first unown I saw in Silver was a B one, and because it looked like a 2D duck I thought it was a Porygon prevo.

What did you want to get for collecting all of them? If you ask me:
>collect every Unown letter
>see evolution sequence
>get a monochrome Pure Psychic Claydol (the Claydol line wouldn't exist)
>if you had one on your team Prof. Elm calls you to tell you that the Unown dissapeared
>if you didn't had one on your team Prof. Elm calls you to tell you that the Unown fused together
>if one of them was shiny the evolution will be shiny

The fact Unown's design is simple and underwhelming is the point, you are deliberately not supposed to be interested in it for its design. They are intentionally understated. And Unown being extremely weak in battle is also the point, it's there to add to its air of mystery, it's shitty and weak just to highlight the fact these things have incomprehensible world-altering power. But not alone individually, and not in a standard battle. Their powers lie beyond the normal realm, they re both absurdly weak and terrifyingly powerful. Their uselessness in battle is many to play up your expectations on their informed omnipotence.

The point of Unown is their in-universe lore and their mystery. Saying they look dumb and suck in battle is COMPLETELY mising the point of Unown's intended role in Pokémon's bestiary.

Unown IS shit on purpose in terms of design and in-game usefulness, and it being on purpose doesn't make it NOT shit in those aspects. It does however make it a completely unfair and short-sighted criticism to claim Unown sucks because of THOSE reasons when it is DELIBERATELY trying to suck in those areas and that is not the POINT of the Pokémon. It's like saying Wobbufett is a bad Pokemon because it learns no attacking moves. It's a bullshit criticism, because Wobbufett isn't even ATTEMPTING to be the thing you're criticizing.

You're trying to say Unown is "useless" while completely ignoring what it actually excels in doing. Some Pokemon have simple (or even ugly) designs deliberately, or suck in battle deliberately, and you can count that as a sleight against them as you wish but you are rather petty for doing so and missing the broader picture of the Pokémon's intended purpose in that game.

Yeah maybe you'd have a point if they ever did anything with the lore, or if it did - fucking anything - in the games, with an explanation or not. Remember when they said there's a connection between Unown and Suicune, then they never elaborated or mentioned it again (insert gigachad here)? It's just one big wasted opportunity.
