Why do these college kids deserve a break on their debt, and not me or other people who invested in the futures differently? What sets us apart? Both options require a large investment using money you don't necessarily have with the end-goal being to make a healthy income.

The government created the student loan problem by backing private loans or issuing loans directly, which drove up tuition costs because the supply of money for that sector went up, which made the problem bigger. Also they made it so you can't bankrupt out of student loans. Also they turned public high schools into advertising grounds for colleges. Also the people taking the loans are too young to see the consequences so they never would have been granted the loans without the government backing.
Most importantly, there's lots of people with student loans and the media cries about it being a crisis, so it's politically popular to forgive them.
