I honestly don't think that I've ever seen redesigns accepted by a community as well as Maxie and Archie's were. I know that the originals were kind of boring, but it was almost like they were forgotten overnight. Meanwhile, Pixiv Red survived the HGSS redesign and only started to lose relevance with SM.

As you said it made a boring concept look much better. Aso giving Archie a wetsuit fits much better, given his affinity for water.

I also really like Roxanne's and Wallace's redesign. Yeah Wallace was really over the top, but that was the point, his gimmick is always giving a show and trying to get everyones attention (at least that's how he always seemed to me) so that makes sense.

The original RSE character designs are so shitty and anyone saying otherwise is a nostalgiafagging Hoennbaby.

Gen 3 Archie looks like a mental patient waking up from a 4 hour nap. You wouldn't even be able to tell he's a villain just from looking at him. The ORAS redesigns are, for the most part, an objective improvement.

My biggest disappointment with BDSP were the lack of new designs. I love the original designs too, but I wanted to see new ones. I'll forever be pissed that I never got to see that.

I like the old design better. More Chinese criminal low-key pirate. Less "I FUCKING LOVE WATER". It makes sense that he's tan and there are things I like about the design. The lieutenants are probably an improvement because I don't even remember the old aqua ones

Magma is a mix. The purple hair girl with the little horns is nice. The big fat guy kind of irks me though. Its nice to have some different body types to spice things up but being a magma admin used to be one of the cooler jobs to imagine having in hoenn, but he makes it look bad.

I just like to think of them all as same characters but their timeline was distorted by living in the mega timeline

Maxie went from (admittedly boring and underdeveloped) person to cartoon character. That's one thing I really dislike about Sugimori's designs from XY onward and Ohmura's even in BW. You look at Gen III Archie and the lowcut shirt says it all. He's more wild and free, he's standing openly, he has an air of business about him, it's a design that says a lot by contrasting with Archie's. ORAS decides that it would be better if they completely overkilled the design and added tons of retarded elements to it that make him not resemble any sort of real person whatsoever. It's like how ORAS Wallace had to look comically gay. Just flanderize the character with a single trait. Some characters like Sidney get ruined. He's supposed to be a well-off, polite delinquent. He's well-dressed and friendly, but he hides a darkness. ORAS has to give him a glare.
