Starting a trucking business

I know quite a few of you anons are truckers so I want some opinions. I have $150k in the bank after cashing out my crypto last December. I've been a company driver for the past 4 years and I'm sick of being a slave. I want to be my own boss

My plan is to buy a used day cab in cash from a mega carrier. Seems like I can get something around 500k miles for around $35k. Ideally I'll haul power only loads, but if the market demands it, I will also buy a 53ft trailer cash as well. Buy a the tractor trailer combo I imagine would cost me around 60-75k outright in cash and not including any other business expenses (insurance, ect)

After watching YouTube videos, it seems like the current freight rates are terrible and the industry is experiencing a recession already. However, I feel as though if I start my business with a paid off truck and trailer, I'll already be ahead of the curb.

On the other hand, I could wait patiently for the recession to REALLY hit and then I could possibly get an even better truck for cheaper after all the new owner ops start going bankrupt. What should I do bros?

I don't know anything about trucks or trucking, but just wanted to wish you all the best user, if you decide to jump into this. Good luck.

Be aware that Hidrogen-fueled cars are a jewish meme and the time to buy a new truck is probably in a few months.

How much do you plan to net after expenses though?

>how much do you plan to net after expenses

I'm not sure how to calculate that until I see what load rates are actually going for in my area right now. I think around $2 a mile is the general consensus of what most OTR owner ops try to average and those guys can easily do 500-700 miles a day. I plan on doing local or short haul work though and it seems the only way to check load rates is to already have a trucking business so you can sign up and see a load board, or know someone who has one and can show you. I do know local dump truck work is paying owner ops $125/hr right now, but getting any decent dump truck has a 6 figure price tag. im very skittish in making that purchase considering the construction industry is probably the most hardest hit industry during hard economic times.

Live near any oil? You could possiblly haul crude or hotshot tools with the right endorsements

Still better than being a little cuck working in an office but be aware that the market hasn't been punished enough and a big crash is coming.

A good estimate on how much you would pull if you own your truck is 100k gross, discount the (((taxes))) and that's around 70k net if you don't live in a liberal hellhole.

really? I feel that's pretty low considering 70k is what newbie driver are making with mega carriers right now. Although I ca still live off it.

no oil fields around me. I plan on working with a broker until eventually I meet a company that want to contract me to work for them

You gave the idea of actually becoming a trucker, it's safe since your huge mass means no car will ever crash and ruin you, pay is better than what most engineers get, and you get to travel around seeing places.

I might leave my engineering job at a Jewniversity that pays 70k in a shitty state to become a trucking mogul. Jus like you I have around 140k in cash.

Best of luck fren.

before you buy your own truck, definitely get a year of exp working for a company fren. learning to maneuver a trailer can take 6 months to a year to master. Put the mega corporations money at risk before your own

Fpbp

I went to the toilet at a truck stop once.
I almost had to puke coming out

I was a broker for a while and I did lots of scandalous stuff. Once I made this guy drive to Georgia from Texas and the load wasn’t even ready. But he signed the contract so I can’t pay him anything. Just the way it goes. Just be a little careful about those things

POS

I’m just trying to make money on the side though, I don’t put in more than 30 minutes of my time per load is my motto. I understand this is people’s career, but I just trying to make side cash

I've taken my fair share of showers at truck stops before. Always felt amazing. Especially after I had just spent 4+ days in my coveralls on a wellsite

Team up, buy a dump truck. One guy drives, the other manages all the paper work and finding the best valued contracts. After a year or two, invest in a second dump truck and hire a driver.

I know you wont do this, but it would have raised the chance of success for both of you

That would require extra certs if I’m not mistaken. Not a trucker myself, but I am friends with two. Asked them about how the industry works and how to strike it out on your own. Outside of hauling basic shit, everything that’s pretty lucrative requires expensive certs to haul.

How do you plan to acquire contracts, OP? Is there some brokerage that has people bid on them? Do you have to contact companies directly? Just having a rig isn’t enough. You need to actually find someone that is willing to contract you to haul it.

Hazmats easy, tanker can't be that hard

whats truckin like in oklahoma? i used to live in edmond for a decade or more. is there any local shit? im in tn doing local stuff, but my boss has cancer, so might be on the lookout for a new gig soon.

Biggest thing with Hazmat is take your time braking especially in bad weather. As for the overall thread I don't have much to add but good luck OP. Being an owner operator is truly the patrician's choice of small business ownership.

Shit sorry I meant tanker.

I wasn't really even trucking, was running logging tools so I had to get hazmat for the sources. Still drove a fuckton though. Got out, was tired of the constant bullshit.
Tanker yeah gotta consider the fluid momentum. The point was it isn't hard or expensive to get though
