You hear about people like Beezos, Musk, and Zuckerberg because the way that they got wealthy was highly public and you can derive a fairly good calculation of their net wealth based on a single company's public valuation against the number of shares that they still hold.
It's a media circus that's designed to exploit your fascination with the wealthy to suck in your attention. It has the incidental benefit of keeping you talking about Musk and Zuckerberg and not paying attention to Thiel and his buddies. It keeps you focused on Bill Gates and not Haliburton.

I think that's what they turn into over time. Something about becoming successful enough to play "front man" for the actual power elite, and becoming a member of the power elite, results in your company suddenly becoming part of the establishment's vested interests. I think it's a chicken and the egg problem though.
Zuck happened to make a tech company that was great at data collection. So Thiel etc bought in with enough money to rapidly expand the company, pulled strings to help prop him up, and now Zuck is some kind of animatronic ghoul who looks like he'd burst into flame if he walked into a church while the company is largely under the control of mid-upper level people that his investors brought in because it's too big for Zuck to know what's going on.
One thing that fascinates me is tracking Musk's family's trajectory over a few generations. Someone, at some point, decided that they were super useful.
