Mmmm meowth-flavored gum

nice

I don't think I ever had any of this

I feel like every pokémon having a specific number assigned to it is part of what made them so popular.
Would Red and Green, and later Red and Blue, have been anywhere near as successful without the pokedex?

Why did they pick Poliwhirl as the center character?

it's satoshi tajiris favorite

Tajiri's favorite, he tried for a while to make it the secondary mascot after Pikachu.

Being at some event at school and kids were playing with those little 2” figures of charizard, blastoise, etc on the bleachers and I didn’t know what pokemon was yet, but I was staring at them in envy because I wanted those figures for myself. I got them eventually.

they also tried to push clefairy as a mascot

Wiggly wobbly froggy blue pepe lovable

I was 5 in 2000 I remember watching the anime, mum got me VHS tapes of episodes, got a pokedex, Pikachu remote control car and I had a gengar t shirt. I didn't play the games until Emerald.

IIRC Clefairy was supposed to be the mascot, but it was deemed too girly for young boys to relate to. So they went with Pikachu would both boys and girls would like (and because he was yellow apparently, and they thought a yellow mascot would stick out).

I had the pokedex that you could go through and read the pokedex entries and the one that talked like the pokedex in the anime if you put little pokemon figures on it

the fact that they thought clefairy would work as a mascot shows that gamefreak didn't really understand america

I just had pic related.
I had a Dratini figure I really liked too use to keep it in my pocket at school.

generally they really liked a lot of the ones who had stone evos
might have actually had those so kids would be less likely to evolve them

that was the better one

I remember Gen2 killed it

Pokemon was already losing some steam before gold/silver came out. Pokemon got too big and had to go away for a while before it could come back in the mainstream

You mean Gen 3. The hype for the second movie was real and finally getting new episodes on Kids WB was an event and holy shit what's that egg Misty is carrying around.

pokemania ended around spring-summer 2001

Mommy bought me this. This stupid thing is what really brought me into the "fad". I still wonder if id be as obsessed as i am now if she hadn't bought it

I traded my cousin some pokemon cards for one of those back then

Both my brother (33) and I (27) played the first gen games. He didn't like gen 2 because he thought it was more of the same. I loved Pokemon until diamond and pearl.
It was my childhood

I got out of pokemon in the middle of gen 2 and got back into it in the middle of gen 3

I thought gen 3 was awesome. Although when I was young, the anime was clearly dying.
