It got a bad rep because the only people still stuck with Pokemon were austists that needed each game to be the same, but it + Pokemon GO brought a lot of new people that enjoyed the fresh direction.

Gen 5 kind of did what u just said already. Gen 5 changed the structure of the entire game. Gen 5 actually has likable characters such as Cheren or Bianca or N. Gen 5 has Team Plasma an Evil team not wanting the destruction of the entire region but to take over the region and also returns once more in a sequel which Gen 7 doesn't. No one cares about Pika-clones.
