In retrospect I wish Ash did get a Riolu back in DP, as back then they would have downplayed it since Chimchar/Infernape would have still been the star. If Ash had Lucario back then it probably would have been treated similar to the way Buizel was, a strong fighter but not the main focus.

Ash's teams at the time were still heavily based on starters and the regional bird. Lucario still had that "too strong" vibe for Ash back then, same reason he never used to get stuff like Dragonite, Tyranitar, Garchomp, etc. back then. They would purposely write Ash as the underdog.
