charmander is the weakest of the 3 in an in game playthrough of red due to low special stat at the time, the fact that the first 2 gyms fuck it up, the fact that ice beam and 3 fire types are available right before Erika and because Charizard in red is weak to ice, 4x weak to rock and weak to water and electricity.
Squirtle gets better matchups because water vs brock, dig vs serge and ice beam vs erika. Bulba is literally also glitchfest with toxic seed, bodyslam, crit leaf, fucked up sleep powder and the AI thinks it is weak to poison attacks so it will always spam poison which Bulba is immune to
