People here talk about "making it" through a high paying career, day trading, etc. but in all honesty what's the point of hard work and 50 hour a weeks at some job manipulating CSS elements, staring at a screen all day, crunching numbers bent over a desk for some widget company. Who cares? Your work is not important, or meaningful, or even often enjoyable. Why do I want to do this for 8 hours a day, for 5 days a week, for the next 30-40 years? Do you really, legitimately think you'll be able to retire? That places like Europe and USA will even be remotely stable enough to allow that in 2060 or 70? Even if you do "make it", and retire, pic related is what the average guy who """made it""" will have to look forward to for all his hard (meaningless) work.
In my end, if you keep your needs minimum, and your costs low, you can live an easy, more stress-free life without working yourself to the bone. Work for a year at a time, save, take a year off and travel to Mexico. Work a job you actually love for a pay cut and meaning. Don't worry about retirement - by the time you'll have to, we'll have full on socialism or total social collapse. Don't worry about the daily grind, the white picket fence - work as much as you need to survive, live and eat. Do things you enjoy. Spend time with people you love and work to live, not live to work.
