In gen 1 routes were hardly meant to be explorable areas in their own right. Literally none of the routes are particularly complex, they're ALL just paths with patches of grass and trainers along the way, and maybe the occasional item behind a cut tree. This one just happens to be the shortest

Hoenn land routes are the best. Unova routes are good too. Galar and Kanto routes suck.

I hate to be a Gen 1 defender but shouldn't routes be fairly straightforward in an urban area? There's presumably pedestrian/bike traffic between Saffron and Celadon.

If Gens 1 and 2 were simple then Gen 3 was too complex. The sweet spot is somewhere in the middle.

The best middle ground is what Unova, Alola, and parts of Sinnoh and Kalos did. Small to medium routes but tons of side areas connected, that way you have a clear main path and exploration available at the same time.
