For a while I thought it was just rock type and didn't know ground type existed in gen 3. The two are oretty redundant.

ground and rock are very different functionally which can't be ignored
despite being similar thematically mixing them just fucks up the identity of both types in a bad way

I think everyone who suggests types should be consolidated is in turn advocating for the presence of more background conditions and categories to differentiate certain moves and Pokemon. Basically, a reformatting of things that are already there. Super redundant.

The only chance they had to heavily tweak Rock and Ground was midway through Gen 1's development or Gen 2, but those timeframes passed a very long time ago and now the types are distinctive enough that a merger would do more harm than good.

In gen 1, rock types were actually made of rock (or fossils who were resurrected from rocks). Ground type just signified that the creature lives in rocky or sandy terrain

Because the ground type is already a combination of Earth and Kaiju type.

So, you need to create a separate Kaiju type if you want to combine Ground and Rock to Earth.


By the way I fully support combining ground and rock. Those who disagree are just gf apologists.

electricity and fire aren't the same material, Rock and Ground are.

Dark and ghost are very distinct, Dark had to do with evil intent and "fighting dirty" until they had to come up "magical dark energy" when the phys/spec split happened. Whereas ghost types are just about pained spirits and the dead, which aren't inherently evil.

because the Fairy type is based on pagan perceptions of nature spirits and witchcraft, hence why they're routinely associated with mushrooms and the moon.

because Psychic power comes from the mind and spiritual connection to the universe (hence some psychics being associated with space) whereas the fairy type, as mentioned before, is more about trickster nature spirits based on pagan / wiccan folklore

Combine Ground and Water into Mud type, now only 2x weak to Grass.
