The which Ash is the best debate is one of the dumbest debates of the fandom. He is the same exact character in Johto that he is in AG, DP, and XY. He had a character arc in Indigo that ended once he won Charizard's respect. Ever since then his character is largely static and doesn't change.

I think XY Ash's biggest issue was that he was a bit 'too much, too soon'. It would've been better if BW didn't hit 'reverse' on Ash's character so hard, but it felt like he became too calm and mature after how he was in BW. Watching XY Ash, you'd think the dude had a completely different journey through Unova than he actually did. Still, much rather have that portrayal than whatever the hell they did in Unova and are doing with him nowadays. The show's borderline unwatchable in its current state.

I don't think anyone denies that was is completely flanderized in JN. Even the way he describes his strategy is awful. That's why it's jarring as fuck to see Serena come in an act like a character he USED to be, even down to using his quotes.

In XY his idiocy was more down to things he said over things he actually did. There were many times where he said something and caused Serena, Clemont and Bonnie to face fault, or get exasperated. May not be as fun as him actively doing something wacky I guess.
