I'm not sure how much mewing helps in adults but proper tongue posture is absolutely crucial for kids to learn at a young age.
Bad tongue posture as a child causes a myriad of issues for an individual - chronic breathing disorders caused by mouth breathing, crowded/messed up teeth, weird nose shape, small and weak jaws, "prey" eyes, bad overall posture causing musculoskeletal issues all over the body, lower testosterone production etc.
