It's melancholic how Hoenn will have its 20 anniversary in a little over half a year from now. I loved the region and the games, but didn't like how Nintendo/GameFreak screwed over fans by not making them compatible from GSC. It wasn't as bad as Dexit, but Unova handled the "soft-reboot" better.

Maybe HGSS, but Sinnoh actively discourages exploration with all the snow, marsh, arbitrary roadblocks, and HM burden (Hoenn Victory Road is also bad in this extent, but most of the region does not require as many HMs at one time, unlike Sinnoh). The backtracking isn't natural and you're encouraged to Fly back. Hoenn is structured so that you can traverse most of the region without needing to Fly. Apart from the Jubilife-Floaroma-Eterna-Orebugh square, that's not the case for Sinnoh. In fact, you can use the HM Fly as soon as you get the third badge whereas in Hoenn you can't use HM Fly until after the sixth badge.
