What's wrong with referencing Kanto?
Gens 2-5 make references to Kanto, Gens 6-8 outright pander non-stop. It gets kind of annoying when instead of making a good game, they just slap Charizard as the Champion's undefeated strongest ever ace and call it a day.

I feel like Kalos and Let's Go were the only real Kanto pandering in recent times. Leon having a Charizard isn't Kanto pandering, Charizard is just a really cool and popular pokemon. Diantha having a Gardevoir as an ace isn't seen as Hoenn pandering either. I think people are just hyper-sensitive to Kanto representation because of the 'Gen 1 vs everybody else' divide in the community.
