It's not totally soulless, it's just half baked but I get what they were going for you can at least excuse it for being the first to go 3D.

Even if you believe this, gen 6 is clearly WAYYYY easier than any previous game, and hell, even easier than gen 7. Gens 3, 4, and 5 all had challenging battles that required me to grind at least a bit, and even a lot before the elite 4. Gen 6 literally had me out leveling the gym leaders without even trying, which should NEVER happen

All of those are gimped versions of whatever you're comparing in Emerald, as well as being severely outclassed by games prior to Kalos. Emerald had a lot for its time, meaning more postgame content than previous games. Platinum did this too. HGSS did this too. B2W2 did this too, with BW having more postgame content than most other previous first versions. XY not beating any of those out is a sad truth.
