Realistically the water starter is always the shittiest choice in any of the games, because water types are always gonna be inherently more common than the other two.
Why would you pick Squirtle if you can use a Gyarados or a Lapras?

Because I want to play with Pokémon I like, not because I'm trying to power game fucking Pokémon. I like Squirtle and Blastoise more than Gyarados. Besides, my personal favourite also has a dual typing that appeals to me.

Because Lapras and Gyarados are available so late in the game I can't be bothered to level them up to match the team (let alone struggle through with a Magikarp).
